10-Minute Spicy Broccolini with Lemon Juice
Spicy Broccolini is a quick, delicious side. Broccolini is gently steamed and dressed with a simple combination of harissa, lemon juice, and olive oil. This tasty, healthy, and irresistible side is on the table in mere minutes!
As we all spend more time at home, and less time at the supermarket, preparing healthy meals can be a bit of a challenge. This is particularly true because most fresh vegetables don’t keep well.
However, many of the brassicas, including cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower, are welcome exceptions. These vegetables are nutritional powerhouses with staying power. Hence, they’re great items to pick up when you do make it to the market.
Broccolini is in season at the moment. So, it’s a great time to try it, if you haven’t already.
Personally, I adore broccolini. This new-ish hybrid is delicious prepared in a myriad of ways. It’s flavour is more delicate than broccoli, and none of it is tough. Hence, it requires no preparation beyond a quick rinse with fresh water. Plus, broccolini cooks very quickly. So, it’s a perfect vegetable for busy cooks!
You can quickly steam broccolini for about three minutes just before serving. Then, dress it, and serve it immediately. Prepared this way, broccolini makes a delicious, nutritious and healthy side.
Health Benefits of Broccolini
Like all brassicas, broccolini is high in fibre and nutrient dense. So, it’s a fantastic addition to a healthy diet. Amongst other things, broccolini is wonder for:
Broccolini is rich in beta-carotene, an antioxidant that’s especially good for your skin. In addition, it contains sulforaphane, a powerful antioxidant that helps keep skin cells healthy.
Broccolini is a rich source of vitamins A and C. Both of these vitamins reduce inflammation and support a healthy immune system.
Like other members of the brassica family, broccolini is rich in the enzyme indole 3 carbinol, which supports healthy liver function. This enzyme assists the body in eliminating unhealthy toxins, including excess hormones. Thus, it supports your body’s healthy hormonal balance.
With so many health benefits, this delicious, easy to prepare vegetable makes a wonderful addition to your family’s diet.
About this Recipe
This spicy broccolini is, literally, as easy as 1-2-3. So, as with any simple recipe, it’s important to remember that the freshness and quality of each ingredient has to shine.
I strongly suggest making your own harissa. It takes mere minutes to make and is an effort that’s really worthwhile. However, if you don’t have the ingredients — or the time — use a store-bought harissa with a flavour you and your family enjoy.
As for the olive oil, choose a fruity Mediterranean oil with a balanced flavour. Since the olive oil is going into the vinaigrette, there’s no need to break out a super fancy oil. The delicate flavours of a really special oil will likely be lost under the assertive flavour of the harissa. However, you will want to use a buttery, fruity oil that won’t contribute any off-flavours to the dressing.
As for the broccolini, be careful not to overcook it. Nothing is worse than overcooked broccolini. When it’s properly cooked, the broccolini will be bright green, and crisp-tender. The crunch is part of the pleasure!
I normally steam broccolini for about 3 minutes. If you like it really well done, you could leave it to steam for up to 5 minutes. However, I don’t recommend cooking it for longer than that.
Most of all, I hope your family enjoys this simple spicy broccolini every bit as much as mine does. Bon appétit!
